I find this ending..... Okay. Not great. Not terrible. Okay. For twist endings, there isn't much of a payoff, but it's harmless enough and it brings intrigue to why Quiet and Ocelot may have treated Snake differently. I never thought of the character I created as 'Me' and that's maybe why the corniness of this ending wasn't felt. 'The player/fan is a part of MGS history' was what most people got out of it, whereas my impression was that 'Big Boss is ultimately more symbolic and replaceable than the legend let on. That ultimately anyone could be built up to replace him.' To me, this fit with a lot of the ideas of the series, such as literally cloning 'The Greatest soldier ever made' and how they tried to recreate the clone by recreating his experiences. To quote Ocelot himself in MGS2: "Given the right situation, the right story, anyone can be shaped into Snake. Even rookies can fight like men of experience." I knew they weren't going to make Boss evil. After seeing how scared they were of portraying him as remotely unsympathetic in Peace Walker, I knew they weren't going to go there here. I've heard that trailers and interviews supposed built up that that's what they were going to show, but I never saw any of those. Even if I did, I probably would have remembered that previous trailers and interviews also implied that MGS2 was going to be about Solid Snake, and that they aren't to be trusted. Several things I didn't bring up or realize: That micro-computer that the Analog to Digital Tape reader was connected to was an MSX. The console that the first Metal Gear Game was on, and the name on the tape is the name of Solid Snake's first mission. I wonder if this was also supposed to explain why Quiet didn't speak initially at Mother Base, that she was biding her time until the real Big Boss showed up, but then ultimately decided to abandon her mission to help Venom Snake. A smaller hint of this is the presentation of everyone as 'Actors' that they're just playing out roles of a predesignated conflicts. (I'm not a personal fan of this story trend, but it doesn't draw as much attention to itself as MGS4 did) An interesting change that hinted at this ending was how every mission after you get the Combat Unit allows you to play as a member of Mother Base. This is different from Peace Walker where your initial playthrough always had to be with Snake, then you could play as anyone. In this version you could always play as anyone you wanted.
