This was the oldest theater in Sacramento that had been continuously showing first-run movies, opened in November 1967. It was something truly special when it was new, having a large curved screen and usually showing 70mm films. A similar dome was built next to it, which had more screens added on over the years.
In 1978 this dome was ruined when the greedy and uncaring owners split it into 2 awkward half-dome theaters by building a wall down the middle. Since the general moviegoing public are idiots, there were few complaints and it managed to stay in business for 37 years after that until it was finally closed for good about a week before it was torn down. The inside was first gutted, and the dividing wall was finally taken down. At about 9 AM on June 2nd 2015, the machine here went to work and it was down by a little after 10.
I managed to get there right when they started the tear-down, but as luck would have it my camera's memory ran out just a few seconds before the roof fell in! Fortunately someone else was shooting and I was able to borrow their footage for the end here- not many people came to watch, I honestly thought there'd be more people taking video.
I had hoped for years that this theater would get a proper restoration, but those in charge said it was just too far gone at this point and had to be put out of its misery. The other building will soon be torn down also, a new theater will be built but current plans are just for a generic small cracker-box multiplex that I will not patronize.
